Dipping my virtual toes back in the Jaiku pond after a LONG absence. How is the open source Jaiku doing? http://identi.ca/ronkjeffries

fancy seeing you here ;)
I find it interesting to see a different model at work (just need to build my mental model to match!)
Can you see a pattern here? FriendFeed taken over by FaceBook (whose privacy policy I don't agree with), so I resign from FriendFeed. Then I hear Jaiku is not only open source, but now hosted on Google app engine and has open registration, and I sign up. And while I still have a Twitter account, I don't post there any more.
Now I need to find an open source service like ping.fm to tie it all together.
@rjeffries: I'm not talking about a FOSS music service (yes, I think there is one) but a multi-posting service - here: http://ping.fm/ - while posterous can do much of the same (but the two don't seem able to talk to each other, which is pretty bizarre). It's hard to tie everything together and even harder to do that with FOSS.
Not sure the over-140chars for comments is an advantage - it ties things to the website, and disconnects it from SMS (which I undertand is how jaiku started, just like T did). For now, I'm experimenting but I may switch to shorter comments ;)
/me notices the above three comments would each comfortably fit into a 140chars space, with room to spare ;) All three together even, and still room to spare.
@marjoleink one terrible bug / feature lacking in jaiku is the ping effect! I can say anyone nicks on somewhere you don't follow, and you won't ever know :( qaiku does that well, and so does laconica :( wish we had it here too
@BUGabundo: Tried gwibber a few times, ok but .... the context and other issues in xmpp is what nudged me fulltime to twitvim. TwitVim fits my work/home/space/usage/budget perfectly.
@BUGabundo: I'm not getting what you mean by /ping/ effect! please explain. and um, four different apps? I'd like one to post everywhere or just a selection; I'm eyeing Twidge... it would need work for Jaiku (I think) but it's FOSS.
@BUGabundo: http://www.poboxpress.com/, which is based on jaikuengine, have "mentions" as a tab. Hopefully we can add that feature to jaiku.com as well.
@BUGabundo: I bet identica will have xmpp [imku] context soon. Look at how many features have been added/updated in just over a year. Much goodness from a small core team and other laconica contributors.
i love revisiting old jaikus along with the comments to read past discussions and accounts of events etc. you can't do that with twitter. and while there's context now with laconica/identica, it's still very primitive and not very elegant. and while most comments are probably within 140 chars, i like not having to worry about that limit if i do end up being more verbose.... :)
@cybette: Aptly diplomatic "not very elegant". But yes, context over there still could use some work. I think they are including >140 for post and replies in the next point release. I do suspect it will not be presented as elegantly as it is here though. I spend way too much time visiting and revisiting conversations. Cannot find all the goodies in one place .... yet. Cheers.
Doesn't a well-tuned search skill aggregate the conversation for most regulars here on Jaiku? I use Twitter mainly through a cluster of search terms, a drilling down into a handful of people, and an aggregation of tweets pulled into Google Reader. I'm doing much of the same with Jaiku as well because I cannot get Jaiku mobile to co-exist with some of my Nokia E90 apps.
The original Jaiku was a new contacts list for Noklia handsets that allowed you to passivley (i.e. the app did it in the background) let your friends know; where you were and if they could call you (two most common questions when staqrting a mobile phone call - "where are you and can you talk"). Jaiku did this by putting a little ball by your name - red for silent, yellow for pager, and green for other profiles when in use.
The lack of limit on comments came from the fact that the website and the S60 client were communicating using IP networks so had no limits, but the starting posts could be sent via SMS, so needed to be within those limits (i have memories of some speculation that the extra 20 characters could be used for advertising as a revenue stream)
Couple of videos with the founders of Jaiku that explain some of the background:
Many people who know me would laugh when I say I'd prefer no limits on any of the comments, like Pownce did it. However the longer limit of FriendFeed works for me 98% of the time.
@ymb: very interesting, thanks! (and why isn't there a link for you below the comment box? bug?)
@jezlyn: I don't know what the limit in FriendFeed is (I just resigned!) but I think some limit would be good, even if it's not 140chars. I find it focuses the mind if you have have a limit and cannot just ramble on -> better writing!
@marjoleink: I appreciate that brevity can force you to more clearly craft your posts, but sometimes proper conversations cannot be had in 140-char chunks. Conversations here and on FriendFeed are more engaging because people can fully express their views without having to edit them down to txtspeak. :P
BTW, I just signed up on poboxpress.com. Who all is signed up there, if anyone?
I've signed up for POBox. It's sorta kind interesting. Who will become my POBox friend?
as to length limits on comments, I think around 300 or 400 chars would be fine. NO NOVELS, please, I can go to the library if I want to read War and Peace
@rjeffries: technical discussions will always be novels. Mostly with the drama. Which is why I avoid mailing lists. No limit, and big egos. Ehem...moving on.

I like that comments to posts can be longer form here. What you just said can not be adequately expressed in 140 chars.
I was an early Jaiku users. In my opinion Google missed BIG by letting Jaiku languish.
Oh well.
Agree, a FOSS music service would be sweet. I thought there already is one???@marjoleink

@marjoleink just because you have Unlimited doesn't mean you have to use it! u can use just ONE char too

@rjeffries: I am still torn on the 140 char issue. Most often 140 is sufficient. I would miss my IdentiVim [twitvim] over here though.

@misstech: xmpp, gwibber, mobile app, mobile site... you are done :)

@misstech: #IMKU (the friendly name we give to XMPP) has context links. wish identica had that :(

@misstech: ohh and #gwibber can show threads too.

oh and it's not just about going back to old jaikus but also following conversations in current ones.

@marjoleink Joi Ito sumed it up pretty well here.

As all the new widgets on the iPhone and N97 prove, having a wifi connection to your social networks is very handy. I wish Jaiku had one for my phone.
